7amleh Presents an Analysis of Palestinian Social Media Activity for 2015

Today on 4 April 2016, 7amleh* issued its new report "#Palestine", which documents Palestinian social media activity regarding major political and social issues in 2015. The first of its kind, #Palestine examines three different facets concerning social media usage and how they relate to real time events. The first chapter presents and analyzes statistics on internet and social media usage by Palestinians in both the 48' and 67' areas. The second chapter outlines the most prominent Palestinian social media activities and campaigns, highlighting their topics and the influence of political events on them. The third and final chapter deals with the concept of digital rights and the right to internet access, as well as the arrests of Palestinians on grounds of their Facebook posts.

The significance of this report lies in its attempt to survey the most prominent issues in Palestinian social media activity during 2015 and how the use of social media, in turn, influenced those issues and events.  #Palestine also aims to show the correlation between political events and different media platforms, not only in terms of interactions between users but also between the platforms themselves (ie Facebook, Twitter, others). Moreover, the report deals with the digital rights violations of Palestinian social media users, especially in relation to the right to internet access.

7amleh- Arab Center for Advancement of Social Media is a professional Palestinian social media center, dedicated to improving the skills and capacities of Palestinian civil society in this field. 7amleh provides training to individuals and community-based groups on the skills and methodologies of social media activism, as well as focusing on creating and supporting grassroots media campaigns which aim to raise social awareness and political consciousness of disenfranchised and marginalized groups.
